National Teachers’ Day is commemorated every November 25 in Indonesia.
“This year, right in the four-year age of Merdeka Belajar (Independent Learning) implementation, we can finally invite 7,500 teachers to come to Jakarta to celebrate National Teachers’ Day,” Makarim said.
He added that the commemoration of National Teachers’ Day, which was also followed online by 4,500 teachers, reflected the teachers’ enthusiasm for the Independent Learning movement, which has been running for four years.
According to the minister, the teachers’ willingness to attend the event demonstrated that the Independent Learning movement will be long-lasting, even though the leadership of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology will change later.
“This makes me even more confident that the Independent Learning movement will have a long life,” he said.
Saturday’s event was attended offline by 7,500 teachers with different employment status, and also included school principals and supervisors.
The commemoration event was also attended by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), who expressed his appreciation for teachers’ dedication to the nation’s children.
Makarim said that the breakthrough achievements of Independent Learning over the past four years would not have gone well without the support of President Widodo.
He advised teachers to continue the good practices of the Independent Learning-Independent Curriculum, which has been applied in more than 80 percent of educational units in Indonesia.
“Let us continue our simultaneous steps to continue the Independent Learning movement,” the minister remarked.
