Govt committed to improving tech to fight online gambling: minister

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The government is committed to improving digital space technology to tackle online gambling and illegal online loans in Indonesia, Communication and Informatics Minister Budi Arie Setiadi has said.

“We have to keep improving because this is a competition of abilities and technology between online gambling operators and the government,” he informed here on Tuesday.

He said he is optimistic that the government can crack down on online gambling and illegal online lending.

He said his ministry will continue to coordinate with other ministries and institutions to accelerate the handling of online gambling and illegal online lending that are currently troubling the community.

Earlier, the minister informed that he has scheduled a meeting with the National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo to discuss tactics for handling online gambling cases.

Setiadi said he and Prabowo will discuss strategies to block banking accounts used for online gambling transactions.

“We will talk to banking institutions, and prohibit all online gambling transactions through the banking sector. However, this is under Bank Indonesia (BI) and the Financial Services Authority (OJK),” he said.

He added that his ministry will also coordinate with the Indonesian Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (INTRAC).

“We must be simultaneous and comprehensive in eradicating online gambling,” he said.

In addition to cracking down on online gambling operators, the ministry is striving to increase public understanding about online gambling and lending through digital literacy programs.

The digital literacy program — which has four pillars, namely digital skills, digital security, digital culture, and digital ethics — is continuing to be promoted among all levels of society, from the general public to regional leaders and the private sector.
