Indonesians urged to plant trees to prevent small islands’ abrasion

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The National Development Planning Board (Bappenas) called on the people at large to actively conduct tree-planting activities in a bid to prevent abrasion and extend the life of small islands in Indonesia.

Director for Marine Affairs and Fisheries at Bappenas Sri Yanti implored the public to not only think about the economic aspect but also about sustainability of the resources.

“The people’s awareness in optimizing the function and existence of the shoreline ecosystem still needs to be strengthened,” she remarked during the beach casuarina seed planting activity in Gili Meno Island, North Lombok District, West Nusa Tenggara, Friday.

“Because of this, rehabilitation effort is necessary, including by planting beach vegetation,” she remarked.

Tree planters in the shoreline area should adjust with the environmental condition. For instance, mangrove tree seeds can be planted along the muddy shoreline.

“Shoreline rehabilitation is expected to be able to provide benefit to the environment and the people,” she remarked.

Moreover, consistency in space management should take into account the environmental aspect, supporting power, and capacity of the region.

Small islands designated as conservation areas should prepare steps, so that large-scale human activities will not negatively affect the environment, such as by limiting tourist visits to the conservation areas.

Referring to Law No. 27 of 2007 on shoreline area and small islands’ management, coastal setback means land area along the coast, with a width proportional to the shape and physical condition of the coast, at a minimum of 100 meters from the highest tide level toward the land area.

Coastal setback region is reserved for plants that function as beach protectors and the use of public facilities that do not change the function of the land as beach preservers.
