2021’s Battlefield 2042 did not put up the kind of sales numbers that publisher EA was looking for, but the company is of course not giving up on the military shooter series. During the company’s latest earnings briefing, EA CEO Andrew Wilson said the next entry will be a “reimagination of Battlefield.”

He went on to say the next Battlefield game will exist in a “truly connected ecosystem.”

That’s all the executive had to say about the next Battlefield. Back in May, during EA’s previous earnings briefing, Wilson said Battlefield will come back in an “entirely new way.” This might have been a reference to the “connected ecosystem” that Wilson spoke about during the latest earnings event.

EA has multiple new Battlefield experiences in the works, including a single-player campaign from Halo veteran Marcus Lehto’s new studio. A multiplayer experience is also on the way from DICE. Ripple Effect, another Battlefield studio, is making an “entirely new Battlefield experience.” It will “complement and build upon the series’ foundations,” EA said.

“A global effort has been launched, coordinating multiple studios under a leadership team of industry veterans to build a connected Battlefield universe,” EA said.

Despite its struggles, Battlefield 2042 was the No. 5 best-selling game of 2021 in the US. Plans were in place to bring the Battlefield series to mobile, but EA abruptly canceled Battlefield Mobile and shuttered its developer.

Battlefield 2042’s newest update, Season 5: New Dawn, released in June, adding a new map, more weapons, and the return of Battlefield’s four iconic classes. Season 6 is on tap for later this year.
