Spider-Man 2’s Fast Travel Actually Travels Remarkably Fast

Back in 2020, when Sony released the “Road To PS5” video describing the console’s technological advances, the console’s lead system architect Mark Cerny mentioned how players had to typically wait for “what is euphemistically called fast travel.” Insomniac Games apparently considered that a challenge, as the fast travel system in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has received some incredible praise leading up to the game’s launch.

Multiple videos have surfaced showcasing the game’s fast travel system, which can sometimes load up an entirely new section of the game’s map in mere seconds. Also, once Peter Parker or Miles Morales appears on-screen, they’re already in full swing, which lets the player assume control while in motion.

The mechanic could have been even faster, but Insomniac core technology director Mike Fitzgerald says the team elected to put a “hold-to-confirm” option on fast travel instead of a single button press for “player usability.” Replying to a thread on ResetEra, he also said that while some have argued the hold-to-confirm is there to hide the game’s loading the next area, “if anyone wants to check, they can look at how late it’s possible to cancel it out when they’re playing.”

Reactions on social media to the mechanic have been varied, with some praise calling it “amazing” and a “magic trick.” Other players don’t think they’ll be using it despite how good it is, as they’d rather swing around the city as friendly neighborhood Spider-Men normally would.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will be available October 20 exclusively on PlayStation 5. Insomniac has announced a small day-one patch, though it has also stressed that players with physical discs will be able to play the full game without needing to connect to the internet.
